Why People Have Negative Attitudes

I just got back from the grocery store and saw someone with something I hate the most… a negative attitude!

So I’m in line, next to check out after the lady in front of me. The cashier politely smiles and asks the lady how are you doing today?

Lady: Fine.

Cashier: Will that be all?

Lady: Could you put my 12 pack (soda) in a bag?

Cashier: Bag?

Lady: (pointing at the plastic bags raising her voice) Yes, a bag, the bag! You don’t know what a bag is?

Cashier: Yes ma’am. I was just making sure I didn’t misunderstand you. I don’t have to many people ask for this kind of 12 pack to be put in a bag. I’m sorry.

Lady: Well all people aren’t the same! Some people do things different!

At this point the lady turns to me nodding her head, like can you believe this lady (cashier)? While I’m looking back at her in disgust saying to myself, your a hot mess. The lady snatches her things and leaves the store.

The whole ordeal was short, but enough to pinch my nerves. The lady is black and the cashier is white. Did this have to do with a little racism? Don’t know and it doesn’t matter. A negative attitude is a negative attitude.

If it’s one group of people that I can’t stand, its the negative people with bad attitudes. The sad part is that in a way I contradict myself for having a negative attitude about people with negative attitudes.

I felt bad for the cashier. You could see it in her face, her mood had changed from optimistic and cheerful to hidden frustration. I told the cashier my first job was working at Albertson’s (grocery store) and I used to hate when I came across some bad ones. I told her,” Don’t let that lady ruin your day, your smile is too beautiful to go to waste”. Hoping that would cheer her up a little.

Through a psychology course and a few self-development books, I learned to at least understand why most negative people are the way they are. They’ve got serious issues and their unhappy with their lives, so they tend to lash out and find negative things to say to people, about people, work, life, etc. The reason behind this is so that they can try and bring you down to their level. Keep in mind this isn’t just my opinion, this has been proven through extensive research from doctors and psychologist.

Major characteristics of negative people -

• When they only, or most of the time have something negative to say about others
• Never smile
• Always find reasons for why things won’t work, rather than how it could
• Rarely shows gratitude
• Will most of the time put blame on others
